How to Pack for a Tropical Vacation (provided by John Fischer)
1. Remember that Hawaii has a tropical climate. The temperatures vary from 85 (most of the time) to 68 degrees (in the winter at night). If you are visiting the windward side of the islands you will see some rain. Also, the Manoa it can rain anytime year round. So, if you are coming in our winter or early spring, you can bring an unbrella or buy a cheap one here (less than $15).
2. Evenings can be cool (for us) especially if there is a breeze (70 degrees). Be sure to bring a sweater or light jacket.
3. Swimsuits are a must as are shorts, short-sleeved shirts, light dresses, sandals, thongs and some good walking shoes. If you plan on riding horseback, be sure to bring some jeans and heavy shoes. Also, for hiking, bring some closed toe shoes. It can get muddy.
4 There is no real need for a suit in Hawaii. Even at most fancy restaurants and night spots a nice shirt and pair of khaki’s or Dockers will do just fine. A sports jacket is only needed at the most upscale restaurants. Ties are not necessary.
5. Sun block, insect repellent (for hiking), sunglasses and a hat are a must. The sun is very intense in Hawaii and you don’t want to ruin your vacation by getting a sunburn.
6 If you plan to explore Hawaii’s waters, bring your snorkel and mask or you can rent them here. This e-guide shows you many beautiful beaches that you can explore and snorkel at, and you will want your snorkel equipment. If you can bring your own. try renting the equipment for the duration of your vacation. This way you will always have it with you while you visit all the wonderful places that the guide shows you. You can always stop and take a dip at one of the many beaches whenever you want. Remember, your time is your own. Be adventureous!
7. Leave ample room to bring things back in your suitcase. Most tourists buy some aloha-wear and other souvenirs that you won’t find on the mainland. Remember that you can ship items home also, which is often much easier and cheaper than you think. There are also many of the upscale signature stores here in case you ever wanted to buy something special for yourself. The prices are not necessisarily more here than on the mainland.
8. Hawaii is the most beautiful place on earth. Remember your camera, film, extra batteries, and x-ray protected film bag. You will find a lot of use for your video camera also.
9. Put important papers (tickets, reservation confirmations, travelers checks), all medications, spare glasses, a change of clothing and any other valuables in your carry-on bag.
10. Don’t forget your e-guide. There are free books along the streets that have maps in them. They will familiarize you with the layout of Oahu. This way you will feel more comfortable with the directions that I have given you in the e-guide.
11. Consider whether you may need any of these specialty items: binoculars, hair dryer, inflatable raft, portable radio, or travel iron. Most hotels and bed & breakfasts offer irons, and you can buy infatable rafts cheaply if you don't want to pack one. However, you might buy the raft at a better price at home.
12. Don't over-pack. Travel as lightly as possible. You don't need a lot of clothes.
13. Make a list of things to bring and check the list before you leave home.
14. Bring the addresses that you want to send postcards to so that you can remind people that you are in paradise and they are not. The postage is the same as your back home.. You might want to bring stamps with you. You don't want to get stuck standing in line on your vacation now do you?
