Oahu Beaches
Hawaii has 130 beaches and they are not created equal. I have chosen 20 that are the best in terms of clean sand, clear water, and good for the water sports that are designated in the guide. You can't do every water sport at every beach. For exmaple, you cannot surf and snorkel at the same beach. You can pack some snacks and it is best if you get their early. The sun is not as hot. Wear lots of sunscreen and don't forget your camera! Before you know it, all your mainland stress and worries will fade away and you will be relaxed. Ahh, paradise.
You are with your family. The Insider's Travel Guide will direct you to fun and safe places where your entire family can sunbathe, swim and boogie board. Hiking
There are hiking paths for the mellow or the medium type hiker. Some hiking paths are slightly graded, some are more graded. Several lead to a waterfall where you can swim in the cool water and have a picnic. Some are in rainforests so you can expect some rain. Once you reach the top of some of these hikes you can have a panoramic view of the island. Be sure to bring your camera, plenty of water and wear the proper shoes.
Hiking Diamond Head, which is the most famous of Oahu hikes, will take you about two hours. You will climb 560 feet from the crater floor and it includes tunnels and a staircase of 99 stairs. Bring a flashlight for the tunnel you will walk through and pace yourself. Go early because it is very hot here and there is no shade. The view is spectacular and well worth the climb.
Kaena Point is another interesting place to hike. It is a bird preserve and home to the very rare Hawaiian Monk Seal. The Green Turtles also lay their eggs here.
You can see some of the world’s largest waves here, up to 50 high in the winter,
so there is no swimming. It is a great spot to watch for the Humpback whales in
the winter, and this is also a rich shark-feeding area. It is a rocky hike but the
views are well-worth it!
